Welcome to the forum!
I will do my best to begin answering your question. I am sure other sisters have some better answers.
Family is very important in Islam. In Islam, the roles for men and women are laid out. Women should take care of the house and the children and her husband. Men should be the leader in the family and the one who is financially (100%) for the family. Women are allowed to work, but working should not get in the way of her duties in the home and taking care of the children.
A hadith from Bukhari (www.searchtruth.com):
From this hadith, we see that even if our parents are not muslims, we should never abandon them. We should still have a relationship with them.
I reverted to Islam, so my family is christian. The families that I know who are all muslims are very close. They depend on each other and help each other out. The parents support their children during college, instead of what commonly occurs here in america where you are on your own after you graduate high school.
“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour”
Here are more Hadith taken from www.islamqa.com:
(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5626; Muslim, 2548)
Islam honours women as daughters. It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever has three daughters or three sisters, or two daughters or two sisters, and takes good care of them and fears Allaah with regard to them, will enter Paradise.”
(Narrated by Ibn Hibbaan in his Saheeh, 2/190)
And Islam honours women as wives. It was narrated that ‘Aa’ishah said: the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The best of you are those who are best to their wives, and I am the best of you to my wives.”
(Narrated and classed as hasan by al-Tirmidhi, 3895).
Sorry for the long post. I hope this helps you.
