Asalaamu Aleikoom wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatu,

A sister recently told me this story and I liked it so much I decided to post it here:

A man lived in a village in the middle of nowhere, far away from anyone, so that you needed a horse to get anywhere. If you didn't have a horse, you were in a bad position. One day, his only horse ran away. The other villagers came to see him and share their sympathies; "We're so sorry. This is such bad news! What will you do?", they said. "Why are you here?" the man asked. The villagers told him that they were here because he had lost his horse and this was bad news. The man replied: "Who told you this was bad news?" The villagers decided to leave because the man didn't seem upset and he seemed a little crazy because he didn't realize something bad had happened to him.

A little while later, the man's horse returned. This time, with a whole flock of wild horses. The villagers came again. "This is such good news! You were right! You had one horse and now you have a whole bunch of horses." they said. "Why are you here?" the man asked. The villagers told him that they were here because things had worked out and it was good news. The man replied: Who told you this is good news? The villagers left again, now sure he was crazy.

Soon after, the man's son fell off one of the wild horses he was training and was paralyzed. The villagers came to the man's house, crying for him. They told him they were so sorry and they understood what he was saying now. "Why are you here?", he asked again. They said: "To share our condolences with you. This is such horrible news!" The man replied: Who told you that this was bad news? The villagers noticed that no matter what he said, he told them the opposite. Again they left, thinking him not right in the mind.

A war came to the village and all the able sons were sent to fight. All the sons from the village died, except the man's son because he had been paralyzed and could not go to fight. The villagers were very sad but were happy for the man. They went to him to congratulate him. Again he asked: "Why are you here?" They said: To congratulate you! You were right. Your son is the only one who lived. We're so happy for you. This is such good news. The man replied: "Who told you this was good news?" And then the villagers realized what he had been trying to say all along. The man had faith in Allah's qadr, sabr in all situations and didn't assume something or automatically be unhappy with his lot.

The moral of the story is that we should have patience and not be so unhappy and sure that something is horrible when we get bad news, because it may turn in to the best thing of our life. And we shouldn't be too happy when we get great news, because it could turn out to be the worst thing that ever happened to us. We should always have faith in Allah and patience, and know that He knows best.

This reminded me of the following ayah :

Jihad (holy fighting in Allahs Cause) is ordained for you (Muslims) though you dislike it, and it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allah knows but you do not know.

kutiba 3alaykum ul qitalu wa  huwa kurhun lakum wa 3asaa an takrahoo shay'an wa huwa khayrun lakum wa 3asaa an tuHibboo shay'an wa huwa sharrun lakum wa Allahu ya3lamu wa 'antum la ta3lamoon(a)

May Allah bless us all with Sabr to accept His Qadr.
Ameen.
