Assalaam alaikum,
Sister the book you mentioned "Fazaail A'maal" has many weak and fabricated hadeeths, so cannot be used as a source of good knowledge.

Salam alikom

Riyad Al-Salihin is a really good book.

Assessment of Fadâ’il al-A`mâl

Question: I would like to know the authenticity of the book entitled Fadâ’il al-A`mâl (The Virtues of Good Works). There seem to be some disturbing and exaggerated claims in the book.

Answered by the Fatwa Department Research Committee - chaired by Sheikh `Abd al-Wahhâb al-Turayrî

The book Fadâ’il al-A`mâl contains within it many hadîth that are authentic (sahîh) and good (hasan). Unfortunately, it also contains a very large number of weak (da`îf) hadîth as well as those that are baseless or outright forgeries (mawdû`).

There are also a lot of stories about the miraculous happenings of other people that cannot be substantiated.

All of these are placed together in a way that the majority of readers cannot distinguish between what is reliable and what it not. This detracts greatly from the value of the book.

We recommend the book Riyâd al-Sâlihîn by al-Nawawî as a superior alternative. It is full of sound hadîth that can help Muslims and encourage them to improve themselves. There are many English editions of this book available.

asalamu alaikum,

I would agree with the other sisters about this book Fadâ’il al-A`mâl it is mixed with falsehood and truth, thus it should not be used as a source for Islamic knowledge. There are many MAJOR mistakes in this book and if you would like to know more please pm me and I can go into detail of the problems. It would be better to use the Quran and ahadeeth from Muslim and Al Bukhari, that way you know the source is sahih.
If you would like help in the halaqa's please let me know, I have a lot of material that can be used for these types of classes. just let me know the subject for the week and i may be able to help. if it is a subject that has already been done. (right now real busy to start any new things)

Assalamualaikum,

Here is an excellent site that gives you an insight on Fadail Al-a'mal and the Tableeghi Jamaa' as a whole  ,  http://www.allaahuakbar.net/INDEX.HTM .

Here is just a part of which they have said with the proofs from the Qur'aan and the Sunnah .

"Are there Baseless Stories in the Fazaail Aamal that harm the Aqeedah (Beliefs)?

QUOTE 1: Moulana Zakariyah mentions in Fazaail-e-Hajj, “Once one of the Abdaal met Khidr and inquired from him whether he had ever met anyone among the saints whom he considered higher in rank than himself. To this he replied, ‘Yes, I have. I was present once in the Masjid in Medina, where I saw Hazrat Shaikh Abdur Razzak directing Hadeeth to his students. On one side was a young man sitting with his head bent on his knees. I went to him and addressed him thus, ‘do you not see the gathering listening to the words of Rasoolullah. Why do you not join them?’ Without lifting up his head or turning in my direction the youth answered: “Over there you see those who listen to the Hadeeth from the mouth of Abdur-Razzak (the slave of the sustainer), while over here you see him who listens to Hadeeth directly from Ar-Razzak (Allah).” Khidr said to him, “If what you say is true then you should be able to tell me who I am. Who am I?” He lifted up his head and said, ‘If my intuition does not fail me then you are Khidr.’ Hazrat Khidr said, “From that I realized that among the saints of Allah there are such who are so exalted in rank that I cannot recognize them.”

[Fazaail-e-Aamaal, Virtues of Hajj, (Eng. Trans.), Chapter.9, story no.9, p.171, (New Edition 1982, Published by Dini Book Depot - Delhi).]

NOTE: The Deobandi translator of Ikhmaalush Shiyaam defines an Abdaal saying, “Abdaal are a class of Awliya whose identities remain concealed. They possess miraculous powers and execute a variety of tasks under Divine Command in various places of the world.” (Astagfir-Allah) [Ikhmaalush Shiyaam (Eng. Trans.) p.59.]

This Deviant Story Promotes that the false belief that someone can receive knowledge directly from Allah without the mediation of the Messenger (sallallahu alaihe wa-sallam) and to receive knowledge from Allah is something specific for the Messengers. This store make this so-called Abdaal equal to Prophet Moosa (alaihis-salam) and our Messenger Muhammed (sallaallahu alaihe wa-sallam) who spoke directly to Allah. "

Assalamu Alaikum
We at home read from [b]Riyâd al-Sâlihîn by al-Nawawî as suggested in Pradise_lovers post. It is really clear and has authentic Hadith in it. It has a lot of good virtues and the rewards attached to them.

Assalamualaikum ,

There is a sahih Fadail al a'maal written by Mustafa al'advy , but this book is in arabic . I donot know if this is translated to english yet.  But it would be soo nice to read the whole of Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim . Now that you have sisters coming you can start on the Sahih bukhari which has been traslated into soo many languages. There are soo many other sahih books that we don't need to follow books that have week hadiths .

May Allah guide us all to the right paath . Aameen

asalamu alaikum,

when studying Islam i would suggest the following,
1)reading directly from the quran
2) get a good tafsir and if you speak arabic there are many fine tafsir's but if you speak english Ibn kathir is known to be the better one.
3) start off with ahadeeth that are known to be sahih which are Muslim and al Bukhari
4) you may want to incorporate some writings from very well known scholars from the past. write me and i can give you a list of the ones I like to use. teacherofislam@yahoo.com

Another ahadeeth book that is good is Malik's Murwatta, it is known to be correct. I also enjoy reading from this book.

If you would like some halaqa's to use as a basis to your get togethers my dh and I teach here and we do one halaqa a week each with different topic of islam. I can send you some things we have already prepared. we use Quran and sahih ahadeeth in our work.
