                    Assalamu Alaikum Sisters,

Although I was not brought up Muslim I have always felt a strong presence in my life that it is the way for me. I have been looking for a Muslim sister to help me along the way with small things that I dont know just because I wasnt brought up Muslim. I live in California in the Bay Area, but simply starting a discussion on email would be more than enough for me. Anyone who might be able to help will be greatly appeciated Inshallah

Thank you so much sisters for your warm replies I was very suprised by the large response. I live in California in the United States and I have been on my path to Islam for several years. I think my biggest hurdle has been in not having any Muslim sisters around me to help me with questions I have that Muslims automatically know when they are brought up that way. I was not brought up in a Muslim family, but they are very supportive of my journey. How does one go about learning Arabic so that I may understand and know how to take my Shahadah.... How does one understand the proper way to pray? How does one understand how to begin to make changes in my life so that I am living according to god's Will? I am a single mother and I want to make sure that my foundation is solid for my son so that I can teach him the proper and right way. I am unsure of walking into a mosque because I do not know the proper way to wash so that I pray correctly. thank you sisters for your help....

                    Hello there,
I would suggest that you start by reading a good translation of the meaning of the Qur'an, such as that of Saheeh International or Hilali-Khan.  Also a short biography of the Prohet Muhammed, peace and blessings of Allah upon him is helpful in learning how to be a Muslim, since he is our role model.
Learning to pray, there is a very good flash presentation that will help you:

                    Asalamu alaykum,

You have come to the right place.  The sisters here are the MOST helpful and knowledgeable.  I am also in your situation although, getting very close to shadada, Insha Allah.  Good luck to you.  The best advice that I got from this site was to take baby steps, I have learned so much and feel confident that you will too!  umm-kevin

                    Salam sisters,
And welcome Rain Supreme.
You have definitely come to the right place.  The sisters here are absolutely wonderful.
Just post your questions and I guarantee you'll have a million sisters jump up with answers.  We love to help out.
I live in Texas, so if you have any questions, I'll be more than happy to help you via email/PM or telephone if you want.
As for reading arabic that is good if you want to do that.  But maybe that would be too overwhelming now.  Try to just read everything in English first, then if you decide to take your Shahada, you can start your arabic lessons after that.
I agree with the other sisters.  Read the Koran and also, what I always recommend to everyone :   A Complete Idiot's Guide to Understanding Islam  A wonderful book that describes very much  from beginning to end in islam.  It's available at any borders or barnes and nobles bookstore.

Femanillah and may God guide you to what is right.

                    Welcome here RainSupreme

My husband used to live in your area. There is a big mosque in Santa Clara, down the express way El Camino. I am sure many sisters there will be able to help you. They also have activities for kids there. I went there once in RAmadan and there was a creche there for the kids during the prayers.

They also have a full-time school, so it would be great for your son too.
