As Salaam Alaykum,

I was in a women's sorority for over ten years before I embraced Islam.
At the time I embraced Islam I was not active, but now I got an invitation to come back.

The sorority just makes money through bake sales, craft sales, and things like that and then turns around and gives all the money away mostly to women's causes such as mammograms for poor women and things like that.

Is this halal or haram?

Since I am kinda new, I have no idea.

Amani

As salaamu alaykim,

I dont know if its haraam or halal, I think this question might be better off in the Islamic ruling section.  I am interested in finding out the answer as well.  There is a muslimah sorority my friends are trying to get me to join and I cant find daleel in regards to sororities.

Salaam

I dont see whats wrong with staying in a sorority as long as I doesnt affect your deen.
Sometimes when you hear the word sorority, you think partys and fraternity...but if that stuff is not involved with your sorority, or even if it is and you avoid it, why leave???

Maybe someone can bring up a fatwa on this...

As Salaam Alaykum,

This is not a college sorority.  It is a sorority of older women which is like a club or group of women who gather to do good things for disadvantaged women.

Mainly they get together twice a month and plan activities to make money to give away to others.  Once we made homemade ice cream and sold it at a city fair and took all the money and gave it go women who could not afford mammograms.  Another time we made a spagetti dinner for the Special Olympics children (these are sports games for children with disabilities to make them feel good).  Another time we did a bake sale and gave the money to the womens abuse shelter.

We just were a group of friends that did good things, all volunteer.  We never kept any of the money for ourselves.  But we did pay dues once a year to belong.

As Salaam Alaykum,

I forgot, they do have little ceremonies such as welcoming you in and honoring you when you have been active for ten years and another each year honoring the sister that did the most for the group, however if any of their ceremonies are against your religion I know they are not mandatory and you do not have to participate it that part.

Assalaamu alaikum,

Jazaki Allahu khairan sister DJ for clarifying what a sorority is. smile.gif

From the way you described it, I don't see what would be wrong with it. Are you helping them in doing anything haraam? Is it a Christian organization? Just some questions that came to my mind, so that inshaAllah we can find an appropiate fatwa.

Also, what do you mean by "pay dues once a year to belong"?

As Salaam Alaykum

Sister Ola, I replied once before but it did not post so if this is a duplicate, please ignore,

This is a non-religious World wide Sorority of just women who meet as close friends and called sisters that just do things to make money and turn it all around to give it to those in need.

The dues are small $30-$40 if I remember correctly a year that just covers paperwork for your membership and a small newsletter that tells what other chapters are doing and giving ideas for fundraising and good causes.

There are no prayers or any kind of religion and the meetings are just to decide how to make money and how to distribute what we collect in the form of projects.

They do honor someone once a year for doing the most and honor people who have been active for long periods of time but attending those functions are not manditory if that is against Islam.

Hope that helps.

Amani

Assalaamu alaikum,

Jazaki Allahu khairan for clarifying sister Amani. smile.gif Since there's nothing haraam or close to haraam involved, I am not sure what to search for. wink.gif Would you like me to send in your question to the Sheikh?

As Salaam Alaykum,

No Sister Ola, I do not think you have to send it in.  Since I am still new to Islam and know very little of such things, I thought I would run this buy Sisters that have more experience.  I myself could not think of anything wrong with it, but I thought I would ask.

Thank you for your time.

Amani
